Road Longings

These pictures are from our Labor Day road trip 3 years ago, and I am revisiting them in order to pretend I am going on one this weekend. Want to come along? It's completely made up, so you can wear your sparkly leggings and your pink bomber jacket, if you like! (or is that just me?)

Ok, and we're off!! That's you on the left, me on the ape-hanger, and we are two cool road warriors! We're cruising the back roads of Hwy 281, on our way to the Devil's Backbone, and we're just about to top the hill down into Burnet.
and around the bend down into Lampasas...

Ooohh! Look up on the hill! It's our good friend Willie Nelson! and...he's jamming with Lyle Lovett!! ...and Elvis!! Seriously, so cool. But, kind of desperate how they've just been waiting for us to arrive. We're cool, so we stop in for lunch, but we've got miles to eat, so we gently escape with promises to return.

They send us off with bootlegs of their new album...and warm chocolate chip cookies.

Eating up those miles...and cookies.

Such strange sights to see on the Texas back roads. Is that a Loch Ness...of the prairie?

And the road goes on forever.
Thanks for traveling with me.
Happy Labor Day.*
*And yes, it is entirely possible, I am both a freak, and have too much time on my hands.
Pretend I am normal. I promise not to bite.

Song-Lines and Dreaming Paths

"Walk your song-line. Sing your world into being. If we are destroying our dreaming side, we are destroying ourselves, and then we are nobody." --Otto, Aborigine

Disquiet

Hello? Are you in there? Please put that down and look at meeeeee.
This fuzzy girl is bonded at the hip to me lately. Maybe we both need it.
Tough week; sooo ready for the semester to be over
Need time to recoup my creative juices, and go off on an adventure with family.
Knitting a pink version of the scarf from the last post.
So behind financially from the recession, we're planning months in advance,
making Christmas presents and stashing them away like squirrels.
I hope I remember where I put them.
This one is for Mom.
.
.
.
Sigh.
What's up with me??
Just a feeling of random, non-specific frustration and disquiet.
Probably I should clean something out...that always helps.
.
.
.
Probably need to stay away from the chocolate.
.
.
.
Ok, need to get the kid out of the shower.
He's been in there for 20 minutes.
.
.
.
Sigh.

Aestlight and Rain

Last night we had the most wonderful thunderstorm...dramatic winds, lightening, rain going sideways...lovely. And in the midst of it all we went to dinner at a great local Salvadoran restaurant that my husband and son simply jones for.  In fact the kiddo ate 4 bowls of the black bean dip, in addition to his quesadilla, and a third of my skirt steak. I had a mojito and a half, the husband had the other half as well as two of his own. (They were small, but he was feeling it middle of the night last night, unfortunately. But it was the rather overdue celebratory dinner for his new job, after most of the summer unemployed, so he was due.) Tonight, we went a bit healthier with a lovely recipe for stuffed zucchini from www.bellalimento.com and used some grass-fed bison I had on hand instead of the beef. Also, added some cayenne, because we're both chile-heads. It was a lovely recipe, and one that will definitely go into our repertoire.  She's got some killer-sounding recipes, I can't wait to try.

Speaking of lovely new things, you might have noticed the rather fetching kerchief I am sporting in the above photo. It is a truly wonderful pattern called "Aestlight" which is gaelic for "East Light".  It's by The Shetland Trader. I just finished it this morning, and have already cast on for one in lovely shades of rose, cream, tan, and pale yellow.

I am not doing any theatre right now; just making the rounds of auditioning. It's been weird, as this is the longest stretch of unemployment (3 months and counting) I have had in three years.  The economy has really hurt the availability of Equity contracts here in DFW. It's hard not to get depressed over it, and I have to admit I have wallowed a bit in self-pity, but no longer. I resolved this week to create my own opportunities, and produce again through my theatre company, even if my fellows are disinclined. I had a taste of professional directing this past winter, and I am hungry and ready for more. Ideas are churning...

In the meantime, I have to admit I am so very much enjoying time at home with the guys...cooking, working on the house, going to yoga and pilates, and also my knitting group on Sundays. It's been most welcome.  At this point it's anyone's guess to see which comes out on top: the yoga or the cooking. Yikes. ;) Guess I'd better think about that one...

Resurrection

So. I've done a little housecleaning around here, dusted off the old cobwebs (both virtual and mental), revamped the purpose of this blog so as to bring it back from its flatline state and actually allow posting.  This is no longer a knitting blog. Cool? Now a 'whatever-the-hell-I-feel-like-today' blog. And I like it that way.

So what have I been up to the past 6 months? ...oops, seven! Hmm...did several plays, made my professional regional directing debut to lovey reviews, enjoyed my family, continued work on our antique money-pit of a house, read tons of books, knitted a lot, learned more about wine, had an emergency operation, laid low, rode high, and in general had a good time. Oh, also discovered FaceBook and Twitter...oops, hello vicious timesuck.

Basically the only point of this entry is an exercise to see if I still like it...we'll see.

From earlier this summer, our first from-scratch pizza on our new pizza stone and peel. The boyo loved making this.
(I'll have to dig up the pictures from our noodle-making adventure...thank you 'Kung Fu Panda' for my child's interest in the kitchen.)

I Could Sell Tickets

Things randomly overheard in the last 24 hours:

"I think Asoka might be at a luxury spa vacation. Is she Obi Wan?"

"Hey! There's the macaroni and cheese. Wait! Don't eat it; it's made of glass and metal."

"The Clown King just called me an eye-shadow guy, and I am SO NOT an eye-shadow guy!! Let's GET HIM."

"If they see us sneak out of jail, we'll be in big trouble."
"But don't you remember, we have weapons?"
"Oh, yeah!"

"And the flavor is poison-berry."

"We are the Chosen Ones. I think I shall plunge the blade of my lightsaber into his foul, treacherous heart. We meet again, Clown King!"

"Don't worry, your legs will grow back."

"I don't think a chainsaw would work on him...or would it?"

Hmm. Maybe I shouldn't have sprinkled the acid on the pizza??

First Sleepover & Epic Battles

So far so good. I think it might be a success?
